Pension funding is an important part of Fairfax County's budget and it has a significant impact on your property taxes. The stated funding objective of the County’s pension plans is to have level employer contribution rates over time. That objective has not been realized despite rapidly increasing annual County cash contributions to these pension plans. Instead, pension plan unfunded liabilities have continued to increase, which have necessitated ever-higher employer contribution rates. The McLean Citizens Association has been instrumental in reviewing and advising Fairfax County Board of Supervisors of this ongoing concern. Please see their updated 2024 document on Pension Liability Here. Those agreeing with the MCA's position and recommendations should ask their Fairfax County Board of Supervisor to support pension reform.
